The Ksamil Islands are the most iconic feature of the Albanian Riviera. These four small, emerald islands—often grouped as the “Three Islands”—sit just a few hundred meters from the shore, offering a tropical escape that feels worlds away from the mainland. If you are visiting Ksamil, a trip to the islands is an absolute must.
One of the best things about the Ksamil Islands is how accessible they are. Depending on your energy level and budget, there are three main ways to reach them:
Swimming: The nearest island is close enough to swim to from the main beach. It’s a great workout, but be mindful of boat traffic.
Boat Taxis: You will find many local boatmen offering quick trips to the islands and back. You can arrange a pickup time with them later in the day.
Kayaks and Pedal Boats: Renting a kayak or a pedal boat (complete with a slide!) is the most popular way to explore. It gives you the freedom to hop between the different islands at your own pace.
The most famous of the group are the two islands connected to each other by a narrow, shallow strip of land. This natural bridge is a spectacular spot for photos and allows you to walk from one island to the other through waist-deep water.
While the islands are small, they offer a completely different vibe than the busy mainland beaches:
Snorkeling: The water around the islands is incredibly clear and home to more marine life than the crowded shores.
Quiet Sunbathing: While some islands have small seasonal bars with sunbeds, others remain rugged and natural. If you want peace, head to the further side of the islands.
The “Amazon” Vibe: The islands are covered in dense Mediterranean vegetation, including bay laurels and myrtle, giving them a lush, green appearance even in the heat of August.
Bring Water Shoes: The shoreline on the islands can be rocky and full of sea urchins. Protecting your feet is essential.
Go Early: To experience the islands without dozens of other boats, try to head out before 10:00 AM.
Pack Snacks: While some islands have small cafes in the high season, they can be pricey or closed during the shoulder season. It’s always best to bring a bag with water and snacks.
Keep it Clean: The islands are a delicate natural treasure. Please ensure you take all your trash back to the mainland with you.
Can you walk to the islands?
In some very shallow spots or during low tide, you can wade quite far out, but generally, you will need to swim or take a boat to reach the main islands safely.
How much does a boat trip cost?
Prices vary by season, but a round-trip boat taxi or an hour of pedal boat rental usually costs between 10€ and 20€.
