Located just a 10-minute drive from the center of town, Butrint National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most important archaeological park in Albania. It offers a fascinating journey through 2,500 years of history, set within a lush woodland surrounded by the waters of the Butrint Lagoon.
Butrint is unique because it isn’t just one ruin; it is a “microcosm” of Mediterranean history. As you walk through the shaded paths, you will see monuments built by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans—all in one place.
As you follow the circular walking path through the park, make sure to stop at these key sites:
The Ancient Theater: Built in the 3rd century BC, this remarkably preserved theater could once hold 2,500 people. Even today, it is often used for cultural festivals.
The Great Basilica: One of the largest early Christian churches in the region, featuring high stone walls that still stand tall today.
The Baptistery: Famous for its intricate 6th-century mosaic floor. To protect the art, the mosaics are often covered with sand, but the architecture of the circular room remains impressive.
The Venetian Castle: Located at the highest point of the park, the castle houses a small museum and offers breathtaking views of the Vivari Channel and the triangular Ali Pasha Castle in the distance.
Opening Hours: The park is usually open every day from 8:00 AM until sunset.
Entrance Fee: For international visitors, the ticket price is approximately 1,000 ALL (around 10€).
How to Get There:
Bus: A local bus runs every hour from the center of Ksamil directly to the park entrance. It is very cheap and takes less than 15 minutes.
Car/Taxi: There is a large parking lot at the entrance if you are driving.
Wear Comfortable Shoes: The paths are mostly gravel and stone, and there is a fair amount of walking involved to see the whole site.
Bring Mosquito Repellent: Because the park is situated next to a lagoon and surrounded by dense trees, it can get buggy, especially in the late afternoon.
Allow at least 2-3 Hours: Don’t rush. The park is quite large, and the shaded forest makes it a very pleasant place to walk, even in the summer heat.
The Ali Pasha Castle: If you have time, ask a local boatman near the entrance to take you on a short boat ride to the Ali Pasha Castle, which sits on a small island where the lagoon meets the sea.
Is Butrint worth visiting with kids?
Yes! The park feels like a forest adventure, and the theater and castle are usually very exciting for children to explore.
Can I visit Butrint as a day trip from Corfu?
Absolutely. Many people take the ferry from Corfu to Saranda and then a quick taxi or bus to Butrint, making it one of the most popular day trips in the region.
