Tirana Airport to Ksamil: Bus, Transfer, Rental Car or Ferry?

Getting from Tirana Airport to Ksamil is the longest single stretch of most Albanian beach holidays. The distance is roughly 270 kilometres and the journey takes somewhere between four and six hours depending on how you travel and how heavy the summer traffic is.

There are four realistic ways to do it. Here is how they compare.

1. Private transfer

A driver meets you at arrivals and takes you door to door. The fastest and least stressful option, particularly with luggage, children or a late-night landing.

  • Time: around 4.5 to 5 hours with one stop
  • Best for: families, groups splitting the cost, late arrivals
  • Downside: the most expensive option for solo travellers

See Ksamil airport transfers for options.

2. Bus

The budget route. Take the airport shuttle into Tirana, then a long-distance bus toward Sarandë, and a short local bus or taxi for the final leg to Ksamil.

  • Time: 6 to 8 hours including waiting between connections
  • Best for: solo travellers and backpackers watching the budget
  • Downside: multiple changes, limited luggage space, fixed departure times

Night buses run in summer and save a night’s accommodation, though sleep quality varies. See bus tickets.

3. Rental car

Pick up at the airport and drive south. The road is good most of the way, with the mountain section between Vlorë and the Riviera being the slowest and the most scenic.

  • Time: 5 to 6 hours at a comfortable pace with stops
  • Best for: travellers who want to explore the coast rather than sit on one beach
  • Downside: a long drive after a flight, and parking in Ksamil in August

4. Domestic flight or a different airport

Vlorë International Airport is significantly closer to Ksamil than Tirana, cutting a large chunk off the drive. If your route allows it, flying into Vlorë instead is the simplest upgrade to this whole journey. See our Vlora Airport to Ksamil guide.

Alternatively, flying into Corfu and crossing by ferry to Sarandë is often the fastest route of all for travellers coming from Europe. Our Corfu to Ksamil ferry guide covers the timings and tickets.

Which option should you choose?

  • Arriving after 20:00: private transfer, without question
  • Travelling alone on a budget: bus, ideally the night service
  • Planning day trips along the Riviera: rental car
  • Coming from Greece or Italy: consider the Corfu ferry instead
  • Travelling with young children: transfer, and break the journey with a stop

Practical tips for the journey

  • Break the drive. Stop in Vlorë or at a viewpoint on the Llogara pass. It turns a chore into part of the holiday.
  • Motion sickness is real on the winding coastal section. Sit in the front and take tablets in advance if you are sensitive.
  • Carry water and snacks. Stops exist but are unevenly spaced.
  • Have lekë on you. Small roadside cafés and some toilets are cash only.
  • Avoid Friday and Sunday afternoons in August, when domestic traffic to and from the coast peaks.
  • Confirm your pickup point with a transfer driver before you land, since mobile data may take a moment to connect.
